While installing a metal roofing system, it is a lifetime investment, if it is a successful one as it will last 50 years or more. Depending on the installation and shingle value, asphalt roofs generally last 20 to 30 years. So the investment could be worth it, but the variety of options makes it more complicated than you might expect to shop for a steel roofing system.
However, if you decide to get a metal roof and want to know how it is installed, then we suggest you read a further blog.
There are two different ways to fix the metal roof without any hassles and they are:
1. Covering the old Roof with New Metal Roof
The first option is to lay on the new shingle roof, covering the old roof entirely. This kind of roofing system brings a few advantages: the first is that the new underlying would serve as a second protective layer in case water gets under the metal roof.
Secondly, it serves as a barrier between the metal’s back and the shingle roof. This is because a shingle roof is a grind, somewhat similar to sandpaper, and because the metal expands and contracts due to weather changes, the metal can move. The shingles granules would wear away at the back of the metal roofing panels over time if there isn’t a barrier between them.
2. Uses of purlins or battens over a shingle roof
Likewise, using purlin and battens over a shingle roof is the other way to install the metal roof. Depending on how the metal roofing supplier checks the roofing panels, the purlins are fixed or nailed down to the roof deck, and then the steel is mounted on the purlins. This method also has its fair share of advantages as well.
The purlins give the contractor a flat surface, without the defects that a shingle offers, to mount the roofing panels. The metal will be applied to at least 3/4′′ purlin and 1/2′′ plywood in place of just 1/2′′ plywood, which is intended to improve the overall roofing structure.
However, the best benefit of using purlins might be the air gap between the metal and the original shingle roof. As the metal roof heats up in the summer, the additional air space between them will act as a barrier instead of the metal heating up the shingle roof below. This construction method also allows you to attach a radiant barrier under the metal roof to help transfer heat to the building, which should make the air conditioner work.
All in all, always check before you begin any roofing project with your local roofing contractor. They will always help you with planning your roofing system without hesitation. From there, you can choose from a few different construction approaches, whether covering the current roof or using purlins. Whatever method you use, you want to make sure that you do it the right way consulting right local roofing contractor.
